Union Affiliation

Roadway has been a unionized company since the mid-1950s. The 18,000 employees who handle and transport freight through our system every day are predominately Teamsters.

Union carriers pay well above the industry average. The result: our better wages attract and retain employees who bring extra quality, productivity and savings. Unlike most non-union carriers, Roadway's turnover rate is very low (less than 3%). This stability contributes to a safety performance that is at the top of the industry. The benefits of a better trained, better retained, safer work force create the highest levels of customer service and flow to Roadway's bottom line.

Because we are a unionized company, a new employee can expect certain things upon joining the Roadway family:

a.. The most competitive wages in the LTL industry

b.. Excellent retirement and health care plans

c.. Teamster 401k savings plan through

  payroll deduction which provides union

workers with the opportunity to accumulate

  supplemental retirement savings

d.. Stock incentive plan that rewards union workers

for company profit and individual safety performance

  with shares of company stock

  e.. Top safety performance

f.. Many runs are scheduled and provide

  more predictable time at home

  g.. Established work rules

  h.. No maintenance

Roadway management and the Teamsters have been partners for over 40 years. The challenge is to make our partnership work for everyone who has a stake in Roadway's success - customers, employees, local communities, and shareholders.

6/24/03

Norfolk Southern Railroad will be holding an application session for the position of Freight Frain Conductor working out of the Altoona, Pa. area. The session will be held at the Blair Co. Convention Center, 1 Convention Center Drive, Altoona, Pa. on Friday, 6-27-03, starting at 8:00 AM.

Hiring Sessions

Hiring sessions typically start with an orientation to describe the job. This is an opportunity for you to learn about the duties and responsibilities, training, work environment, wages and benefits for the position. You also hear from the local supervisor for more specifics regarding the position. Then we have a question and answer period, followed by a short break.

Interested individuals return from the break, pen or pencil in hand, ready to work on application forms. Applications are quite detailed, asking for information for a 10-year history of your traffic record, residences, education, military and work experience. An Employment Officer then reviews applications, and individuals are selected to remain for evaluations, the next phase.

Evaluations are simple instruments to place applicants on a level playing field and to compare abilities with others applying for the position and those who have successfully made a career in the position. Evaluations are mostly pen and paper exercises for math and verbal, recognition skills and workplace behavioral characteristics. Some positions require advanced exercises for more complex math and verbal skills. Clerical positions always require typing aptitude of at least 35 words per minute.

Following another break and Employment Officer review, names are announced for individuals to stay for interviews. Interviews usually start around noon to 2pm and are usually short in length. Some interview candidates may spend most of the day with Norfolk Southern, waiting a turn for an interview and an opportunity to be selected for a great career. Please come to a session prepared to spend most of the day.

Occasionally, Norfolk Southern breaks up the process into application days, followed by evaluation and interview days. Those sessions require only one hour of your time to complete an application on the application day, and then possibly several hours to most of the day on the evaluation and interview day.

Norfolk Southern is committed to offer employment, training, remuneration, advancement and all other privileges of employment on the basis of qualifications and performance, regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, sex, age, disability or veteran status.
