Mining Technology and Training Center (MTTC) In 2006, the UMWA Career Centers, Inc. received a Congressional Earmark to provide the funding to start a New Inexperienced Coal Miner Training Program in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The Mining Technology and Training Center opened in late Fall 2006 in Pennsylvania and in January 2007 in West Virginia. The first 150 students will receive 9 weeks (360 hours) of new inexperienced miner preparation, mine safety, and hands on training in a simulated coal mine. This training will prepare the students for a career in the mining industry at no tuition cost to the participant. Participants may be expected to provide gloves and boots. At the successful completion of the course, students will receive a certificate from either Penn State University (for students attending the Ruff Creek, PA Campus) or the Community and Technical College at West Virginia University Institute of Technology (for students attending the Beckley, WV Campus). Additionally, students will receive State certification (after successfully completing all work and passing all necessary tests) and a card from MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration). These certifications will give graduates the necessary criteria to enter the mining industry. All instructors are MSHA certified and are knowledgeable of the coal industry. Most of them have worked in the coal industry for more than 20 years. Not only is the MTTC committed to training miners safely but also placing graduates in employment in the coal industry. An industry partnership has been created and partners have endorsed our program and agreed to consider graduates from this program to fill their workforce demands.
